What is Future Tense?
It is used to describe things that have not happened yet. We will find out how “will” and “shall” are used for Future Tense.
1. Describing something that is done later
We use “will” to describe something that is done in the near future. Let’s look at an example:
“Kenneth will have lunch.”
In this case, Kenneth is planning to have lunch later.
“Georgina will go to bed in an hour’s time.”
For this sentence, the girl is planning to sleep later.
2. Describing something that may happen later
In some cases, we use “will” to describe something that may happen in the near future. Let’s try an example:
“It will rain later,” said Joey.
In this case, “will” is used to show Joey’s belief that it is likely to rain later.
3. Asking a question on something that may be done later
We use “shall” to ask a question on something that is possibly done at a later stage. In other words, we use “shall” when making a suggestion. Here’s two examples to showcase the application:
“Shall we watch a movie?” asked Yi Leng.
In this case, Yi Leng asked if they want to watch a movie later.
“Shall I carry these books to the staff room?” asked Macy.
For this sentence, “shall” is used as an offer by Macy to bring the books to the staff room.
